The installations took a half-hour or more, interrupted frequently by pointless PUP alerts.

I did manage to install the full suite on eight spyware-infested test systems. McAfee does point out that most users will experience this kind of big cleanup just once-thereafter, PUPs won't be allowed to install in the first place. Several times in my testing, an error during removal prevented removing any more items, and I had to rescan. If removal fails, the app changes the item's status to "Cannot be removed," with no suggestion what to do next. McAfee won't let you select another until it's finished with the first, nor can you select multiple items for removal. You click a PUP, click Remove, and wait a while. And removing them manually is a total pain. If you click Finish without reviewing the results, they won't be removed. McAfee cleans up Trojans and truly egregious threats automatically, but PUPs just get marked as Detected. When the scan's finished, another problem lurches into view. A few minutes later the whole thing starts again.

Naturally I say no, since a scan is in process. Shortly afterward, McAfee announces it couldn't remove the PUP and asks if I want to reboot and scan. When I say go ahead, it posts a disclaimer (every time!) saying that I might have agreed to install this PUP I click Yes to remove the PUP anyway. The cycle goes like this: McAfee pops up a real-time warning offering to remove a PUP. For one, the suite's real-time protection frequently flings out pointless interruptions during a full scan and even during product installation.

I don't mean just problems during testing, though I'll discuss those. With such high-powered AV, you'd expect equal aptitude at battling Potentially Unwanted Programs (McAfee's name for spyware)-but that sure wasn't my experience. VirusScan is the star in McAfee's cast of thousands. It gets the VB100% award from Virus Bulletin, it's certified by ICSA Labs for virus detection and cleaning, and West Coast Labs gives it checkmark certification for detecting and cleaning viruses and for detecting Trojan horses. McAfee's VirusScan technology regularly receives accolades from the independent antivirus testing labs. But then, it's cleaning both spyware and viruses. It's slower than Spy Sweeper or Spyware Doctor-it took over 20 minutes to scan a system those apps handled in 7 minutes. Of course, you can schedule a different time and choose your own day or days. By default, McAfee runs a full system scan every Friday at 4 p.m.

At first glance I couldn't figure out the entries named PC Health and Windows Protection, but I learned later that the former refers to data backup and the latter ensures that Windows Update is set on automatic.Īlthough you can configure AV and antispyware scanning separately, the app scans for them both in the same scan process. The Computer & Files category includes antivirus and spyware scanning, as well as SystemGuards-real-time monitors that watch for changes to the system. Experts can switch to the Advanced menu-it's not as pretty, but it offers more information and more control. For some features, an Advanced button leads to further configuration. Clicking one of these shows the status of corresponding features with a link to a simple on/off configuration page. The suite's elements are organized into four general categories: Computer & Files, Internet & Network, E-mail & IM, and Parental Controls. Yes, updates are automatic, but McAfee's designers have found that users also like to be able to check manually.

A big Scan button launches a full system scan a big Update button checks for updates. Clicking the Fix button should correct any problems and get you back to green status. At the top is a big status banner that shows a green check, a yellow exclamation, or a scary red X, meaning the security configuration is, respectively, okay, marginal, or compromised. Its overriding theme is simplicity-quite a challenge for such a feature-filled product. The McAfee Security Center that holds the suite together has a brand new design.

Unfortunately, more is only better if it works, and far too much of the former Falcon either doesn't work or may actively harm your system. But it adds network management, wireless network protection, backup/restore, parental control, and much, much more. Naturally, it has the firewall, antivirus, antispyware, and spam protection we expect to see in any suite. The McAfee Total Protection security service (originally code-named "Falcon") includes everything but the kitchen sink-and if the kitchen sink could protect your computer's security, they'd probably have thrown that in too.
